About BlockWise
What is BlockWise?
BlockWise is a time-blocking and accountability app. You plan your day in advance on short, configurable blocks (15–60 minutes), assign work by dragging your own company icons onto blocks, then track how the real day compared to the plan — including what interrupted you, who it was, and what it cost. Days seal into an honest history, and your time exports as evidence: timesheets, R&D diaries, disruption reports.
Who is BlockWise for?
Anyone who runs their own day: consultants and contractors juggling several companies, managers responsible for a team's time, accountants' clients who need R&D time evidence, and anyone who wants to stop wondering where the day went. It was designed by a dyslexic founder, so it's unusually friendly to people who find dense, text-heavy tools hard work.
What is time blocking?
Time blocking is a planning method where you divide your day into fixed intervals and decide in advance what each one is for — turning an open-ended to-do list into concrete appointments with yourself. Read the full explanation on the Method page.
How is BlockWise different from a calendar or to-do app?
Three ways. Tasks and blocks are the same objects, linked both ways — ticking one completes the other. Every block is accountable: completed, overran, changed or interrupted, with named interruption sources. And finished days seal themselves — viewable forever, but edits need a passcode and leave an audit trail. Calendars forgive and to-do lists forget; BlockWise remembers.
Who makes BlockWise?
BlockWise was created by Douglas Knight, who ran his working days for years on a paper time-box sheet — 05:30 to 21:30 in 20-minute blocks — and built the app he needed. Read the story.
Pricing & billing
How much does BlockWise cost?
The first month is free. After that: $3.99/month or $29.99/year in the US, UK, EU and most top markets, with purchasing-power-adjusted pricing elsewhere — around $2.99/month in markets like Brazil and Mexico, around $1.99/month in markets like India and Indonesia. Annual saves roughly 37%. Full table on the pricing page.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — the entire first month is free with every feature unlocked. Payment details are captured in the store's own subscription sheet when you sign up, nothing is charged for a month, and cancelling during the free month costs nothing.
How do I cancel?
One tap in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings, or via the manage-subscription link inside BlockWise. The stores run the billing and send renewal receipts — cancelling is genuinely easy, by design.
Does BlockWise show ads?
No. We considered an ad model early on and rejected it. BlockWise is a clean subscription — and your schedule, task, company and people data never leave your account for any commercial purpose.
Using BlockWise
Can I change my working hours and block length?
Yes — day start, day finish and block length (15, 20, 25, 30, 45 or 60 minutes), with each weekday free to have its own shape. The grid regenerates automatically.
What happens when my day changes half way through?
Everything on today can be changed with a tap or a drag — move blocks, stretch them, clear routines, swap tasks. The original plan stays intact underneath as the baseline, so planned-versus-actual stays honest. Only anchored calendar appointments are locked, and even those unlock individually with a tap.
Can I use my own company logos?
Yes — that's the heart of the app. Drop in a PNG and BlockWise creates the company automatically: named from the file, icon attached, accent colour picked from the logo itself and checked against your other companies so nothing clashes. Dragging the icon books time to that company.
How does BlockWise track interruptions?
Two taps: what happened, and who or what it was — a person from your People page, or a service like a dead phone line. BlockWise shows who interrupts most, which priority tasks were displaced and the estimated cost, flags repeat offenders, and builds per-provider loss reports for service failures.
What is R&D Relief in BlockWise?
Every block has an R&D button under its time. Press it and those minutes register immediately in a dated, year-long diary for that company — including provider-to-client work, where one of your companies develops for another. Claim-evidence reports export in one tap. BlockWise produces time records, not tax advice — whether work qualifies for relief is one for your accountant.
Can BlockWise produce timesheets?
One tap: a billing-ready CSV or PDF for any company and date range. Your icons booked each block to the right client while you planned, so the timesheet built itself.
Does BlockWise work offline?
Fully. BlockWise is local-first — plan, edit and tick with no connection at all. When you're back online everything syncs and merges automatically.
Privacy & data
Is my BlockWise data private?
Yes. Your schedule, tasks, companies and named people are private to your account, protected by row-level security, never shared between accounts and never sold. No ads. Connections to other services are yours to switch on, scoped, and revocable. Full detail in the privacy policy.
What about the people I name in interruption logs?
Named sources exist so your records are useful. They're private to your account, never shared, only exported when you export them, and included in your GDPR export and delete.
Can I export or delete my data?
Yes — self-service export and hard delete are built in, in line with UK GDPR. Your days can also back up automatically to your own Obsidian vault as markdown, so you always hold your own copy.
Connections & AI
Which calendars does BlockWise connect to?
Google Calendar first, with Outlook and Apple Calendar connecting the same one-tap way. Events land as anchored, visually distinct blocks you plan around. Manual appointments work from day one; live sync arrives in the first big update.
Can AI assistants like Claude or ChatGPT use BlockWise?
Yes — BlockWise ships a first-party MCP server and public API. Connected agents can read your schedule, plan a day, add tasks and reprioritise — fully two-way with your own edits. Agents respect locked blocks, your template and your priorities, and can never touch a closed day. Keys are scoped and revocable in the Connections hub.
Accessibility & languages
Is BlockWise dyslexia-friendly?
Deeply — it was designed by a dyslexic founder. Dyslexia-friendly font toggle, adjustable text size, high-contrast mode, WCAG 2.2 AA minimum, passwordless sign-in, and dictation or handwriting anywhere typing is possible. This website has the same font toggle — the Aa button in the header.
What languages does BlockWise support?
The very first screen asks your language. BlockWise launches in English with the stores' top locales following quickly, is architected for every language including right-to-left scripts, and priority-language translations get human review with a community channel for corrections.
Can I handwrite or dictate instead of typing?
Yes — every entry point accepts tap, typing, voice, or pen (Apple Pencil Scribble, Android stylus) converted to searchable text. An update later adds an ink layer that keeps your handwriting exactly as written.
Launch & platforms
What platforms does BlockWise run on?
iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and the web — one account, everything in sync in near-real-time.
When does BlockWise launch?
BlockWise is in the final build phase and launching soon on the App Store and Google Play. Join the waitlist and you'll be emailed the moment it's live — with your free first month waiting.
